Not all bikers are rough and tumble, some are reformed. And then others are big teddy bears with a purpose. Chuck Palumbo is a reformed, rough-and-tumble teddy bear on a mission to bring awareness about the plight of soldiers that have been wounded or fallen and their families’ needs.

Today, Palumbo will head out from San Diego on a cross country ride on the chopper he built by hand – dubbed “War Machine” – and will pluck the name of a lucky winner at the end of his trip in Rockingham, North Carolina. Anyone can purchase one of 5,000 $25 raffle tickets to have a chance at riding away with the prized “War Machine”. All of the proceeds of the ticket sales will be donated to “Fueled by the Fallen” – a 501c3 providing scholarships to families who have brought home a wounded warrior or lost a loved one in combat, as well as funding organizations that promote research on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Breathe Easy Ride shows biker support of finding cure for cystic fibrosis

Victory Motorcycles announces support of the Broc Glover Breathe Easy Ride

Many motorcycle industry celebrities and racing heroes will travel in style aboard new Victory Motorcycles as part of Broc Glover’s Breathe Easy Ride starting in Temecula, California on March 29th, 2009. The ride raises both awareness and funds to help find a cure for cystic fibrosis (CF) a life-shortening ailment described as the most lethal of genetic diseases.

When their son, Dayne was diagnosed with CF, Broc and wife Molly turned to their friends in the motorcycle community for support. “Cystic Fibrosis is devastating for so many young lives and families,” Glover, the former AMA Motocross champion, and member of the AMA Hall of Fame. “When we received the diagnosis of CF we were devastated – but with the support of our family and friends we found our strength. As news spread to our friends and the industry, the idea for a charity ride came together, and last year we launched the Breathe Easy Ride. We were stunned by the support and the money we raised for this important fight especially since this terrible disease receives zero government funding. We’re excited to have Victory motorcycles as part of our event this year, and are looking forward to seeing that long line of motorcycles ride together in support of finding a cure for this disease.”

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product causes the body to produce unusually think mucus that clogs the lungs, causing difficult breathing and leading possibly to life-threatening infections. Ten million people (or 1 in every 7 Americans) are silent carriers of the defective gene. In the 1950s few children with CF lived to attend elementary school. Today, advances in research and medical treatments, funded by the 5-star-rated Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, have further enhanced and extended life for children and adults with CF to a statistical 37 years. Despite these advancements, there is still not cure for CF and far too many young people are losing their battle to this progressively fatal disease as early as in their teen years.

The ride will start and finish in Old Town Temecula and will again see hundreds of registered riders, as well as, many of motorcycling’s most recognized legends. The separate Cruiser and Sportbike routes follow scenic 100+-mile routes through San Diego and Riverside counties’ most beautiful back roads and will serve to remind all participants to not take the deep breath of a satisfying ride for granted. New this year is a limited-entry, dual-sport ride, guided by AMA Hall of Fame off-roader Scot Harden. Pre-registration for the event is available through www.breatheeasyride.com.

All proceeds benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s on-going mission to find a cure or control for cystic fibrosis. All street-legal riders are invited to join the ride, meeting motorcycling legends scheduled to appear such as Darryl Atkins, Ron Lechien, David Bailey, Scot Harden, Troy Lee, Mike Bell, Larry Huffman, Jeremy McGrath, Denny Berg, Rick Johnson, Roland Sands, Scott Burnworth, Grant Langston, Marty Tripes, Roger DeCoster, Danny LaPorte, Jeff Ward, Micky Dymond, Eddie Lawson, Brenda Fox, Mark Blackwell and of course Broc and Dayne Glover.

Those who cannot attend the ride are encouraged to visit www.breatheeasyride.com for other ways to show support, including making a tax-deductible cash donation, event sponsorships, opportunity drawings, and participate in the eBay auction of some amazing motorcycling memorabilia.
